They went in. Cold. YSSS was in for 20 minutes. New world record.
Summer. Here it comes...

The Cover Is Off!!!
Later than I usually do it, I took the pool cover off on my day off. Have a couple of small tears in this cover (five years old), so I guess I'll be purchasing a new one come closing time (October round my parts).
Was cold up until Easter Sunday round here; now it's humid and warm most days. Who knew the Mid-Atlantic States had a two season climate.
Water is pretty clear, could use a little jump start, so I'll go to my local (not really) pool supply store to grab the chemicals and other stuff I need to get me headed in the right, and only, direction. To "aqua perfection".
And no doubt, the Sons of SoulSlam will want to jump in today after school. An annual ritual.
Sweet.

New Digs
Have a new office at the place of employment. Moved in this morning. Electricity doesn't work. Good thing I have a 1/2 day or I'd be SOL with the laptop.

Start Looking
NY beat writers love to stir the pot...so Adam Rubin has this in the NY Post.
I get trading Reyes, though it's probably (definitely) a mistake. You can't make up his production at a premium position with anybody on the farm. But trading Wright? I would say for many, that would be like the Tom Seaver Midnight Massacre in 1977. And I remember how sad I was as a kid when that happened.
So Mets fans sit and wait while Sandy the Scrapman basically dismantles what is for what it will be. Problem is, I don't think anybody knows.
Sad but true.

Redeye Boyo
Took the redeye from Vegas last night, landed at 5AM at JFK - walked into Casa de SoulSlam around 7AM. Beat like a mule right now, but YSSS is in the spelling bee at 10AM so I'm gonna go cheer him on.
Working with a massive headcold - the air at the hotel was deadly. Needing some air, I took in the Las Vegas 51's game on Tuesday night. Pacific Coast league baseball. Sweet.
But nothing compares to being home with the SoulSlam's.

Viva Las Vegas

In Sin City for work this week. Mandalay Bay. This is the place for people who have absolutely no self-control. Every vice is covered here. I mostly lay low, go to the events I have to attend and try to sleep through the 3 hour time difference.
Back home Thursday AM, taking a red-eye on Wednesday night. Check back then.

Titanic #2

Wow. Words cannot describe how bad this team is. Hope springs eternal, but a 4-9 record after a 3-1 start is a major downer.
Braves come in this weekend. They are 5-8. So there better be some drastic improvement or it's gonna be pretty late around here, in the 3rd week of April if you get my meaning.

Washout #3
Another day, another travel baseball game postponed. I'll be playing games in December at this rate.
It's not just rainy, but cool and generally crappy for virtually days on end. Tough to get outside and really rip at the plate in practice, y'know.
Forecast looks kinda sunny, but the weather still hasn't turned, hangin' in the 50's and 60's, like a bad weather version of American Graffiti.
I have to skip to Vegas on Sunday night for a couple of days for work. Maybe the weather there is nice.

Swamped at work. Like a bayou. Only big, like an ocean. But less salty.
Weekend games - loss and a loss. Handed two teams (10U and 12U) wins because we couldn't get the job done. Oh well. The Sons of SoulSlam are hot at the plate right now.
In-town league practice starts this week - I try to stay light with this, it can get a little tedious when you have kids who can't throw, catch, etc. Maybe I'm showing my age here, but when i was a kid, everybody could play. Now, it's the rule is the exceptions.
Run for cover.

I Work Cheap
Program runs a huge girls softball tournament every April. You know, softball, that big yellow ball. Lot's of weird rules I don't understand. They have a Magic Circle apparently. That's kind of strange but comforting for anyone who believes in the power of the Magic Circle.
So I went down about 8AM to lend a hand, being a team-guy. Problem is, the folks on the big yellow ball side of the program don't really do much - preferring to watch the "baseball guys" work throughout the day as field crew, maintenance, etc. I guess cheering you own kid all day for a couple of games gets tiring.
Problem is,all the "baseball guys" have baseball on Sunday, so they will be left to their lonesomes to get everything done. BLLLLAHHHHH!

Opening Day - NY Mets

Anyway, game was a 4:10 start, gates open at 1:40 so we were there. Free Mr. Met Bobblehead to first 25K fans, and we got the first three! Cruised up the escalator to some sweet seats in section 128 and the kids got Jason Marquis to autograph their gloves. Good guy.
Walked around, kids played some XBox MLB2K11, tossed some throws at the dunk tank, ate some ballpark eats, had a great time. It was cold, it was cloudy, but it was opening day. Unfortunately the Mets couldn't cooperate, pitching was baaaadddd. So they lost. But we had a great time.

Finally Played
12U finally git to play...lost 4-3; up 3-2 going into top 7, made some great plays in field but a couple of walks and then a hit killed us. The walks will do that.
Other than the approach some of my players have at the plate (watching strikes go by repeatedly) I've got nothing to complain about.
Back at it this weekend.
And in the really cool news dept. - got tix to the NY METS HOME OPENER manana. The men of the House of SoulSlam are going to Citi. Nice.

Oh Boy
What to blog about? Let's see...
10U team is 1-1 after a loss on Sunday. Score was 3-1, we couldn't get any offense going. Other team had one big hit. Pitching and D was good.
Spring is still hiding for the most part; 62 degrees yesterday, right now it's cold and rainy, looks the same most of the week.
Got tix for Mets Home Opener, but the Sons of SoulSlam don't know yet. So don't tell them.
Brian Cashman really oughta pipe down. I guess the $8mm they shelled out is killing them with all the empty seats.
Texas Rangers look like an offensive juggernaut.
Lights Out got cancelled. So it is literally lights out. Hope Patrick wins the belt in the title fight in the series finale.
Missed Wrestlemania for the first time in 5 or 6 years.
The Killing was really good.
This is a great site.

Travel Teams' Opening Day
12U scheduled to play in a nearby town at 1PM today; coach calls me at 10 to tell me field is unplayable - explain that if he called me last night, I could have had a field ready by me. So I sent the guy an e-mail to see if we could play tomorrow, but he's ignoring it I guess. So no games at 12U level.
10U played at 5PM - team came down from way yonder. Won 6-1, nice win. Everybody played hard and hustled. All we can ask. They are back at it tomorrow, another home game.
Baseball!

The Real Opening Day
Holy Cow

Now this might give A-Rod* a run for his money.
I think Charlie Hustle oughta hire a personal valet.
