The Gloom of Opening Day

If you listen to the suicide hotline, I mean WFAN, the Mets fans are all in their "woe is me" glory.

Being the optimistic type, I say let's see what happens in the first 20 games. If it is as bad as everyone predicts, then you can call Kevorkian, but not sooner.

Here's my predictions:

Starting Pitching - we're short here. Santana, Niese and Maine will be good. Pelfrey will be shaky. Why did we sign Ollie P.?

First Base - Jacobs has the job since Murphy is on the DL. Jacobs has got some pop. He may surprise everybody.

Second Base - Luis. Here for what seems like an eternity.

Short - Reyes will have a blistering year. Bet.

Third Base - Wright will be in the running for MVP. Bet.

Outfield - We will have a great year out of all the OFs.

Catchers - we've certainly cornered the market in guys nobody wants here.

Bullpen - K-Rod and a cast of thousands. All trying to get the Mets to the 9th inning.

Bench - OK. Not great. Nobodies is (unless you're the Yankees).
