What a milestone.

Anyway, how do you get people who look like they just surfaced from under a rock come to your home and speak to you in extremely nonsensical tones?

HAVE A GARAGE/YARD SALE!

I have never seen so many trucker's hats (and not fashionable ones) and ill-fitting tanktops in so short a span.

Mrs. SoulSlam is selling off everything. Me, I powerwash the merch, hump the heavy stuff, and generally stay in the back of the house, straightening out my garage, or scheduling a couple of practices so I can disappear. The two-day event is almost over, so maybe we can get back to normal.

The Gift of Blankness

Just sitting here on a Thursday night, watching Dodgers-Cubs on MLB Network, and an epiphany hits me - time to blog!

I like to think I thought up the title The Gift of Blankness, but I'm not 100% sure, so all you litigious types, keep your writs of habeas corpus or whatever to your bad selves.

So what is The Gift of Blankness? Simple. Baseball is the type of game that can prey on your mind if you let it, and the more you think about not hitting, or making an error or doing anything wrong, the more likely you are to keep not hitting, making errors and making mistakes. The Gift of Blankness is the ability to tune all that out, each moment is clear and unencumbered, and you have no baggage to tote. Failure is short-lived in the holder of the Gift's mind - and they succeed because they can.

In the book Moneyball by Michael Lewis (coming to a theater near you), the dynamic between two ballplayers (Billy Beane and Lenny Dykstra) is described:

"A high school phenomenon who chose pro ball over Stanford, Beane was drafted by the New York Mets in the same draft that brought Darryl Strawberry to the big leagues. Coming up in the Mets farm system, he roomed with Lenny Dykstra, who was destined for a permanent spot in the Mets outfield.
As Lewis tells us, they were two very different kinds of ball players and the contrast is instructive: “Lenny thought of himself and Billy as two buddies racing together down the same track, but Billy sensed differences between himself and Lenny. Physically, Lenny didn’t belong in the same league with him. He was half Billy’s size and had a fraction of Billy’s promise – which is why the Mets hadn’t drafted him until the 13th round. Mentally, Lenny was superior, which was odd, considering Lenny wasn’t what you’d call a student of the game. Billy remembers sitting with Lenny in a Mets dugout watching the opposing pitcher warm up. ‘Lenny says, “So who’s that big dumb ass out there on the hill?” And I say, “Lenny, you’re kidding me, right? That’s Steve Carlton. He’s maybe the greatest left-hander in the history of the game.” Lenny says, “Oh, yeah! I knew that!” He sits there for a minute and says, “So, what’s he got?” And I say, “Lenny, come on. Steve Carlton. He’s got heat and also maybe the nastiest slider ever.” And Lenny sits there for a while longer as if he’s taking that in. Finally he just says, “Shit, I’ll stick him.” I’m sitting there thinking, that’s a magazine cover out there on the hill and all Lenny can think is that he’ll stick him.’"

So the point? - Lenny had The Gift of Blankness.
Blank is Beautiful. Get Blank Ballplayers.

Memorial Day

Monday, the official day. Happy Memorial Day and let's not forget those who sacrificed their lives for the rest of us.

Anyhoo, finally got my new pool filter pump on Friday and replaced it Saturday. I guess I didn't realize how loud the other one had gotten, since I have to check and see if this one is actually on every now and then. We're humming along. And the kids and their friends were in the pool yesterday after the local parade so they stirred up the bottom and now we are 100% again. Pool nirvana.

Long weekend of no baseball, I think this is the last time that will happen. On the one hand, it's good for the boys to get a break, on the other, they might go flat and lose their sharpness. We don't play again until next Sunday (and even our rec team has no games this week!), so I need to get a couple of practices in to make sure we are ready. We need to win our last two games and try to get a 1 or 2 seeding for the playoffs. After that Summer league begins. Counting down...

East Coast Energy

WOW - Mets beat the Red Sox 3-2 in a Papelbon blown save top nine. Team is having it's troubles but coming back to the EC has done wonders for them. They look more alive than when the played the Left Coast teams earlier this week. Today they go for the sweep in Boston. Let's go Mets.

Random baseball thoughts:
  • Will Yankee fans accept A-Rod's BA when he stops hitting HRs?
  • Just who will Jake Peavy accept a trade to?
  • Giambi hits #400 in A's uniform (and presumably clean)
  • Keith Foulke (2004 WS hero) is now playing for the Newark Bears
  • Strasburg time is almost here
  • Tony Gwynn Jr. comes home to the Padres; father breaks the news (Nice)
  • Bobby V is out in Chiba Lotte
  • College World Series is almost here
  • Yankee Stadium has become Coors Field East
  • The trade period will be frantic this year

My pick for CSW - Ole Miss. Book it.

    SUMMER!

Officially here with this weekend. Can't wait.

Pretty wide open this holiday w/e - baseball tournament we were scheduled to be in was cancelled because the program hosting is too lazy to make calls and get enough teams. As I said once before - "LOSERS". So we practice our hitting tonight, little pizza party after and then it is basically three days of relaxation. Don't know what I'll do with myself.

Sitting at work, counting the minutes until the whistle blows.

Mets - Bosox and Yanks - Phils in interleague play beginning tonight. Should be good.

    Try Something Good

Now I sometimes give a Siskel and Ebert thumbs-up for a movie or TV show that I find to my liking, and I do everyone a public service for the betterment of all mankind.

So I'm watching Sunday Night baseball on ESPN, Morgan and Phillips are droning on about Carlos Beltran, and I'm enjoying a snack; a snack that will brighten up a dull life.

I'm talking about Green Mountain Gringo Salsa my friends. The only real addiction I have. Originally made in Vermont!, it has since gone the way of many boutique brands and bought out by a larger concern. No matter, it is jar after jar of spicy tomato goodness, and paired with Tostitos® Lime Chips - it becomes the ultimate taste sensation. No lie. Try some and you will stop buying that red porridge you call salsa forever.

    Pool Post #1 for 2009

Here's the first (of many I am sure) posts about the pool. For all you newbies, it is highly recommended reading.
(The pool above is for representation purposes only. Mine is better.)

Pool officially opened a week ago, with the 'sinking of the ladder'! Been cool and rainy, so we get a lot of green stuff in the pool, which I diligently vacuum whenever possible. The water looks crystal clear, so we are ahead of the game. Busy baseball week, but I got some facetime this morning and I can get a couple of hours tomorrow, so we are in bid-ness (as the street lingo goes)!

Now the bad news - need a new pump motor. Problem is I have little to no time to get one, so it will have to wait until later next week. Current motor is loud but cranking, so I'm good for now.

And now for the reason I will have time next weekend (which is Memorial Day W/E) - my 10U Blue Devils were scheduled for a M.D. baseball tourney in a neighboring town. But those guys had to cancel since they couldn't get enough teams (4). Losers. That's what happens when you don't market your product. Lesson over.

    Something for Friday

I've been away for awhile so I do apologize. Not anywhere but here (that is surreal), but busy. Like a one-legged man in an a**-kicking contest busy.

Lot's of local baseball - with a home tournament taking place this week. Unfortunately my boys got housed. Happens in youth baseball. I don't get upset about losing - but I do when we give up or don't try very hard. Maybe I'm just upset with myself. I'll have to think about a little retrospection when things slow up.

Question: Do you have any weasels at work? The type - the kind who is very quick to question and criticize, yet is very unlikely to actually do anything of value. I have a new weasel in my sights. And crossing SoulSlam is not advised.

Most of my TV Shows (3 out of 4) have left me hanging for the summer or longer. To recap:
  • Fringe - kind of creepy ending, and the gravesite image at the end was also chilling. Great show.
  • Lost - my attention was not at it's best Wednesday, so I have to watch again on the web. Liked the loophole though.
  • Supernatural - BEST SHOW ON TV. And now Lucifer rises. Good job, Sam.

So now I have more time to watch MLB Channel.

    Busy Weekend Update

Besides Mothers Day, this weekend was my 8 year old champ's first communion. So the family of SoulSlam had a real busy one. No baseball though, which seemed odd. But my program is hosting a tournament this week, and with PAL Games thrown in, the boys on my travel team will play 7 games this week. Eye of the tiger.

So back to communion. I have an idea. For all you heathens who think there is any reason at all to bring a cellphone into church, you are wrong. Unbelievable. I'm sure the guy in the $76.00 suit in front of me was on call with the Mayo Clinic or something, so you get a pass, Doc. (cue the sarcasm)

Anyway, the kid did great, made his communion, had a bash at the house and now it's back to normal. Adios.

    A Bit Surprised

Imagine my awe at the news Manny failed a drug test! As a long time follower of all things Slam, you know I called him a Jake a few months back. To me, he didn't seem the type. Liked his response - very slimy.

A-Rod (took out the *) comes back tonight for the Yankees. Maybe he can pitch the 9th.

And Bob Melvin gets fired from D-Backs. He was NL Manager of the Year in 2007. Maybe it's open season on that type. Better hide Joe.

    5.06.2009

    Seis de Mayo

Day late, dollar short; missed it by that much; don't think it's got the hang time; all relevant to the name of today's posting.

Also relevant is the way the Bosox have manhandled the NY Yankees through five games this season. Stealing home, homers off Rivera and now the 1B coach tipping off pitch location to hitters (which everybody does) - which prompts Clueless Joe to say "you're going to get somebody hurt!" Well Joe, those are tough words that need follow through, which the Yanks did not do last night, when they went 0-5 against the Beantown crew. But remember this Joe - retaliation hurts as well.

Mets beat Braves at Turner in a two gamer. Lot's of positives coming, the Mets need to keep it going against the Phils. Santana vs. Park tonight at the stadium. maybe the Mets can score a couple of runs for Johan tonight. What a concept.

    5.03.2009

    Rain Delay?

Waiting for rain, with a DH to start at 1PM. Hopefully it's light and the other coach isn't a Mary and will want to come and play at least one. His team is not so good having scored no runs yet through three games so SoulSlam is a little bit on edge.

In MLB stuff: Hamilton goes on DL; Ollie Perez gets a chance and comes up small; CC Sabathia loses yet another (that's a lot of jing to be losing games); Longoria hits a Giant Salami; MLB is now investigating A-Rod; and Ellsbury is making things happen on the bags.

I have to go and do a Don't Rain Dance now.

    How "bout a Cheesesteak

A Philly favorite, pick one Pat's or Geno's. As long as you get one.

The Mets came to town tonight and "got one". Big Pelf with the W in the City of Brotherly Love. The city that Rocky Balboa made famous. And the home of the World Champions. Big win, let's keep the momentum going.

    LETS GO METS.
